Characteristics of Zingiber mioga

Zingiber mioga is a hardy, vigorous Asian ginger that is commonly used as a culinary and medicinal herb in Japan, Korea and China. In Japan in particular, it is valued for its delicate flavour. Very ornamental of this charming Japanese ginger. Its lush, soft green foliage can grow up to 80 cm high. In mid to late summer, the pale yellow to white orchid-like flowers are produced rather bizarrely close to the ground, as if masses of orchid flowers had been scattered among the foliage. It is the new shoots and flower buds that are edible. The rhizomes and leaves are not considered edible.

How to use Zingiber mioga

An exotic-looking perennial, Zingiber mioga can be planted with banana trees, cannas and ferns for a jungle feel. It will also find its place in the vegetable garden or in a pot on the terrace and should be brought in during the winter so that it retains its vegetation.

Tips for growing Zingiber mioga successfully

Ideally plant the Zingiber mioga in fertile, well-drained soil. It will tolerate rather dry and even poor soils, even if a contribution of organic matter will be necessary at the beginning.
